What should I do if I think my pet was poisoned?

A bright clinic reception with a curved wooden counter, pendant lights and plants.

The answer

Contact an animal poison control line or the nearest emergency clinic straight away, before you try anything at home. Do not induce vomiting or give any remedy unless a professional tells you to. If you can, note what your pet may have swallowed, roughly how much and when, and take the packaging or a photograph with you. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center states that it is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and that a consultation fee may apply. Follow the instructions you are given by phone.
